“Mammoth” 1991 VW LT45 4×4 Doka
After a few years with Moya I started to lust for 4wd. But after spending so much time on Moya and working on other peoples syncros I decided to look at other forward control vehicles. I knew I had to have an LT after learning about them. 4×4, front and rear lockers, transfer case with 4lo, and 5 speed dogleg mounted to a turbo diesel? Yes Please.
Owning rare import projects are never easy and the factory only produced 1200 VW 4x4s, in tin top, high top, doka, and sinka configurations. 2wd versions are plentiful so most parts aren’t too hard to find, but others really sting to order over the pond or are NLA.
It wouldn’t be a VW without an underpowered engine and other quirks. So to deal with the LT drawbacks I will be doing a full drivetrain swap to more available American parts. Starting with the axles and transfer case, then the transmission and engine later. Check in here for updates and details.
It’s really a truck you have to see in person to experience why it’s called Mammoth. You’ll also see why it’s called Project, but where’s the fun in starting with a shiny hunk of metal.
